Sea Lion Caves

Incredible marine life can be viewed just 10 miles from Quality Inn Florence at Sea Lion Caves. The largest sea cave in America, home to the Steller sea lion, is more than a tourist attraction. As part of the Oregon/Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve, it's also a protector of the environment and animals include whales and sea birds. What's more, you can learn all about the life of sea lions by checking out the array of displays.

  • Are sea lions always in the caves?

    It's important to understand that Sea Lion Caves is not like a zoo. it's a natural habitat where sea lions come and go. So, no, they are not always in the caves. However, if they're not, they may be visible in any number of places, such as the ocean or the rookery.

  • How much walking is involved?

    There is a considerable amount. It begins with the 37 steps that lead to the outside trails. Then there are about 400 yards of walking that’s both uphill and downhill. From there, you’ll be at the elevator that leads down to the caves. Finally, you’ll have to navigate 63 steps in the cave to reach the lighthouse viewpoint.
